1. The essay shows a clear understanding of the task(正确理解题目的要求和概念)
ACT的审题相对SAT更容易,因为ACT写作话题的广度和深度都要小一些,大多都是校园话题,一般审题对于考生不是太大的问题。但是大家还是需要注意不要扩大或缩小题目的概念。 以下面题目为例:
“Should high schools adopt dress codes for students?” (学校是否应该执行着装规范?)这个题目需要大家重点理解的概念就是“dress codes” 着装规范指学校关于学生穿着的一些规定,比如不准穿过于暴露的衣服,奇装异服,印有侮辱性言论的衣服。有些学生在理解这个概念的时候自动缩小了概念,全篇文章都在讨论学生是否应该穿校服。对于这个题目,穿校服只是着装规范的一部分,不能以偏概全。所以大家在审题的时候需要注意对题目概念的理解。
2. The essay takes a position on the issue and may offer a critical context for discussion(有明确的立场并且交代讨论的背景)
表明立场不存在什么问题,但是很多学生在写作的时候并没能交代讨论的背景。什么叫讨论的背景呢?就是交代和话题相关的现象,不同的观点及理由。通常都是在开头段体现这一点。以下面两篇范文为例:
这是6分作文开头:
“Multitasking is a very bad habit when doing homework. It has negative effects on concentration, learning skills and the homework itself. By eliminating multitasking during homework would have a positive influence on many aspects.”
文章开头表明立场并且交代了理由,但是并没有交代任何背景。
对比一下10分作文开头:
“Multitasking has become an essential talent for high school students nowadays. In the face of sports, family, homework, friends, and all the other obligations and activities that such students often have to deal with, time management is essential to maintaining the delicate balance between sanity and simply being overwhelmed. As well, there are many positive effects (both short-term and longterm) that can result from doing several things at once. Multitasking is very useful for managing one’s time and in gaining beneficial habits.”
文章开头两句话很好的交代了背景:由于高中生面对繁重的学习,活动,所以多任务处理已经成为高中生的必要技能。

3. The essay addresses complexity
(对题目有深刻的分析,能够考虑到问题的复杂性)这一点要求很高,也是大多数学生所欠缺的。如何做到能够有深刻的分析呢?主要体现在以下三个方面1). examining different perspectives on the issue(考虑不同的角度)鼓励学生从不同方向思考问题,不如对于一个话题,学生可以从学校,家长,社会,学生,经济,文化等各个可行的角度去思考,这样比单一从学生的角度去思考会更深刻。
2). evaluating the implications or complications of the issue(考虑话题的内涵和复杂性)这一点相对来说比较难,一个可行的方法就是在文章中考虑到短期和长期的影响。下面举例说明:
“If the student does choose to multi-task, there can actually be benefits in the form of good habits. In the short-term, the student may actually create enough of a gap in his or her schedule to allow for some leisure time, providing an often much needed break from work. The long-term effects are even more beneficial in that the student will form useful talents that will serve them well in the business world.”
这段论述就分别讨论了multitask 的短期和长期影响,所以体现了作者思考的深度。
3). fully responding to counterarguments to the writer’s position(回应反驳)这一点操作性最强,所以希望大家在写作中都要做到。这一点要求大家不仅陈述自己立场的理由,还需要回应反方立场的反驳。目的就是为了增强文章的说服力。下面举例说明:
“ Some people may claim that it isn’t possible to divide attention evenly between several things at once while producing something of optimum quality. This view, though, is only correct when it comes to multitasking many things. As long as there are not too many simultaneous tasks, the quality can still be high.”
这篇文章中作者的立场是支持multitask,在陈述完理由之后回应了反方观点的反驳“在同时处理多任务的时候很难做到平均分配注意力而且高效”。作者回应说“只要我们控制同时处理任务的数量,就能够实现高质量高效率。”
